Frequently Asked Questions

Where do lessons take place?

I have a beautiful and large purpose built studio that is detached from my home so you will have complete privacy and comfort in your lessons. Expect comfy chairs, a  bright and clear space you can move in - and a brilliant coffee machine if you're that way inclined! I live just outside of Exeter.

Do you do Zoom / Skype Lessons?

I prefer to teach face to face in my large, dedicated studio space, but will teach from Zoom if necessary.

What ages do you teach?

My client base is ages 18+. I will occasionally take on ages 16+ if the student is looking to pursue music / performance in a higher education setting or is in the music industry.

Do you teach all genders?

Yes. I have a great understanding of voices in general, and as a female teacher I'm experience and knowledgable in how to teach the male voice.

What styles do you teach?

I specialise in:

Pop / Rock

Musical Theatre

Jazz

I'm very experienced in teaching in a genre specific way - so if you're a musical theatre singer who struggles to sing pop, or a classical singer wanting to sound more contemporary - I can absolutely help you!

If you are looking to learn classical or opera, I would recommend you a different teacher as I specialise more in repertoire from the 1900s to the current day.

What will I learn?

You will learn a lot! Of course, I tailor my lessons to you. The first session will include an assessment, as I get to know your singing (and speaking) voice, your previous experiences with music and performing (if any) and discuss some goals that you'd like to achieve. But to give you a general idea, lessons could include:

  • Learning songs (chosen by you, I am also happy to suggest repertoire)
  • Effective warm ups, and understanding why these are important
  • Effective exercises, to build agility, stamina and range
  • Anatomy, and how our 'singing system' works ( breath, body, vocal folds, articulators and much more)
  • Song interpretation
  • Stylistically appropriate techniques
  • How to introduce your songs and speak to an audience with ease
  • Audition preparation for drama schools / college
  • Graded examination preparation
  • Teaching you the skills you need to identify why you aren't making the sounds you want, and how to build strategies to fix it!

Lessons will be at your pace, and taught in a way that works for your learning style. Perhaps you're better at learning by ear, maybe you're a kinaesthetic learner, or learn better aurally. We'll figure this out and make it work for you.

What do I need to bring?

It can be useful to bring along any sheet music / lyrics (we'll have discussed this prior to a lesson).

It can be useful to bring a bottle of water to keep yourself hydrated.

Do wear something comfortable that you can move freely in, and doesn't restrict you.

I will supply a keyboard and PA, and I have a large collection of sheet music and books in physical and digital formats.
